Sailworks Change Of Business Plan

Communication to our valued customers and fellow sailors

June 26, 2024

Looking Forward:

After 35 years of innovation and dedication to the windsurfing community, Sailworks is entering a new chapter of operations, service and product offerings.

What's Changing:

We are shifting our focus from overseas manufacturing and distribution of windsurfing sails and masts, to local service, custom sailmaking and industrial textile fabrication.

The final production runs of Sailworks sails and masts are happening right now.  This is it - the last sail production!

This summer, we will gradually phase out of windsurfing sail distribution. Our remaining windsurfing sail and mast inventory will be available at special pricing until stocks last.

Our Hood River sail loft and website will remain open to provide ongoing support for repairs, warranties, performance tuning, and custom sailmaking.

What's Not Changing:

Sailworks is not ceasing its Hood River operations.

Our core staff, Jim & Dale, will continue with us.

What It Means for You:

This summer is your last opportunity to expand or replace your collection of Sailworks sails and masts at the most competitive prices!

You can have confidence that your sail investment will continue to receive the dedicated service and technical support from its creators.

You will continue to have access and support to all the other exceptional gear we ride (Sabfoil, F4 Foils, Nolimitz, Chinook, Streamlined, etc.).

Bruce Peterson's Perspective:

"For the past 40 years, I have put my heart and soul into windsurfing and sail design. This journey involved taking risks with innovation, overseas manufacturing, global distribution, insisting on high quality, delivering on commitments, charging a fair price, and consistently being there for the service and support.

My passion has always been to create high-end, intuitively functional products. Alongside exceptional employees and partners who share this passion, we've built a brand and a business that stands strong, both on the water and off. We love windsurfing. We build great products. And we stand by them.

I'm thrilled about this transition to a more flexible and fulfilling phase of my life, returning to my roots of making custom sails and sewing for myself, close friends, and a dedicated group of riders.

As we navigate this transition, I extend my deepest gratitude to our customers, business partners, and the entire windsurfing community for your unwavering support.

It is an honor to be part of your windsurfing adventures and to share our passion with you.

I am immensely proud of what we have built together.  Thank you for continuing to be a part of the Sailworks journey."

Sincerely,

Bruce Peterson and the Sailworks Team

Looking back on our history:

Sailworks has built a strong reputation in the windsurfing industry, specializing in the design and manufacture of high-performance windsurfing sails. The company was founded in 1989 by Amy and Bruce Peterson. Bruce was already a prominent figure in the windsurfing community with a background in professional racing and prior sail design work for Windsure, Rushwind and Gaastra.

Hood River News 5/25/90

The inception of Sailworks was driven by Peterson's vision to create sails that combined advanced performance with durability and user-friendliness. Over the years, the company has maintained a strong focus on innovation, continually refining its designs to meet the evolving needs of windsurfers.

In the early years, Sailworks gained international recognition for its race sail designs, which featured unique shaping and tension profiles, innovative materials, and construction techniques that set them apart from competitors. World Cup podiums in slalom, course racing and wave sailing proved these designs. Bruce’s own commitment to racing inspired rigorous prototyping and testing, and honest validations of design and performance. We are immensely grateful for our long-time and loyal employees, Jim Mudry and Dale Cook, whose three decades of dedication and commitment are the bedrock of our success and sustainability. This commitment to innovation, support and service helped the company establish a loyal customer base and a strong reputation within the windsurfing community.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Sailworks continued to expand its product line, introducing new sail models, and incorporating cutting-edge technologies that are hallmarks of the Sailworks legacy. The legendary Retro camless slalom design became the leader in freeride performance sails for everyday windsurfers, and remains a flagship model and a benchmark in the windsurfing world. The highly tunable and versatile Revolution and Gyro answered the call for freestyle, bump ‘n jump and hardcore wave sailing. Our racing heritage and windy home conditions led to the creation of the unique Hucker with a higher center of effort that fostered long floaty jumps and a power riding style. The adaptation of hydrofoils to windsurfing spawned the purpose-built Flyer and Flyer-FR foiling sails to exploit the benefits of foil efficiencies.

Here at Sailworks, dedication to the sport extended beyond product development. Historically, the company has promoted windsurfing through sponsorships, competitions, demo events, clinics, junior race camps, and educational initiatives. This participation has helped foster a vibrant windsurfing culture, a loyal and knowledgeable customer base, and supported the growth of the sport globally. As a small independent sailmaker with its own exclusive sail production factory, the company was uniquely positioned to total build and quality control, ensuring that each sail was meticulously crafted to meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.

We are proud of the Sailworks history – marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence in sail design, a deep connection to the windsurfing community, and a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
