The FLYER- a foiling sail? At first we had no plans of making a sail for foiling, but progressive testing over the past two summers with all of our sail models lead us to find unique attributes that were beneficial for foiling from each one. Yet, all of those attributes did not exist in just one sail.
The FLYER blends the low- aspect ad four-batten layout from the Gyro wave sails, the low-twist and tighter leech-tension balance from the Hucker sails, combined with the batten set and cambered leading edge from the NX race sails. All in a very low-rig tension, narrow-sleeve, four-batten, and twin-cam purposely optimized for windfoiling. With a blend of geometric and tension profiles unlike any sail we have ever made before, the FLYER sails are truly unique.
Foiling is so hydro-dynamically efficient that it noticeably reduces the induced-loading effect upon the sail. Camless sails often don't fill out to their maximum depth when foiling and the draft profile movement of a camless sail creates an uneven mast base pressure that effects a steady foil trim. The cambered leading edge on the FLYER sails maintains the maximum draft profile set even at sub-foiling speeds, while locking the draft profile in place for a consistent and predictable foil trim. Unlike modern cambered race sails, the FLYER's straight-luff-curve and low-rig tension makes the camber rotation subtle and effortless for silky, smooth foiling jibes.
The FLYER is designed for RDM masts and has a couple quick rig features to get you on your foil sooner. The straight-luff-curve design makes it easy to pull the cams down the mast, so feed the mast through the cams when rigging. The mast sleeve is a closed-top design, with a "double-overlap" Spectra webbing strap, so there is no cap or plug to set at the mast tip- just push the mast in and downhaul.
To say that we're passionate about foiling here at Sailworks would be the understatement of the year. We are so hooked! The foils and FLYER sails have rekindled the giddy excitement we felt in the early years of windsurfing. Get lifted!
