Power Is Nothing Without Control

April 1, 2010 · No Comments

Bruce Peterson at 2009 US NationalsIts easy to get powered up just by carrying a bigger sail, but control issues begin to develop when you have excess power.  There's a powerful rig handling technique I use when I'm lit up that's based around leading your sail control with your front hand.

Start by hooking in, and then using your harness connection as a fulcrum point, lead your rig control actions with your front hand.   Pushing away with your front hand becomes sheeting in with your backhand, while pulling in with your front hand becomes sheeting out with your backhand.  It sounds counter-intuitive, but this technique separates sheeting angle control of the sail from hiking out (rig leverage) and counter balances the two actions into opposing forces.

Push away with your front hand to load the rig and lean back.  Pull in with your front hand to depower the rig and un-weight the rig.  Try it on land first hooked into some breeze, and then take on the water.  It works!
