Adjustable Outhaul Systems

We are huge proponents of adjustable outhaul (AO) systems for windsurfing sails.  They are not just for racers, but also for anyone who desires to exploit the maximum wind range of their sails.  Think of it as a gearbox or transmission for your rig.  With an AO you can make your sail fuller and more powerful, or leaner and more stable, on-the-fly while you sail.  Unlock the full wind range of your sail with this simple line system.

To run a two sided adjustable outhaul system your boom must have two pulleys at the clew end.  The adjustment straps are tied off along the boom just behind your harness lines.  The adjustment strap has 8:1 purchase, so its easy to pull the sail flatter without sheeting out on the rig.

The benefits of an AO are huge, especially if you sail in gusty or variable conditions.  Ease off the outhaul to power up in lighter winds, or to push deeper downwind on abroad reach.  Pull on outhaul tension reduce power, increase rig stability when over powered or to cut upwind more efficiently.  Using an AO lets you bias your downhaul setting slightly tighter for better top end performance, knowing that you can always pickup extra low end power by easing off the outhaul.
