Last week I was in Los Angeles for the 2013 US National Windsurfing Championships. The event was really focused around formula and slalom, with a little bit of freestyle.
The freestyle part of the event was just one 15 minute heat with 6 guys. During the heat the wind started off pretty good for my 5.0, but as the heat went on it kind of dropped and so I should have been on my 5.4 by the end. I still managed to get some burners, culos, skopus and other tricks that let me win the freestyle. 15 minutes is pretty long when you’re use to competing 6 or 7.
Congratulations to the other top riders in freestyle, Wyatt Miller in 2nd, Casey Hauser in 3rd and my brother Tom Soltysiak in 4th.
In the slalom part of the event Tyson Poor was fighting with Phil McGain for the overall first place, but Tyson got it in the end. I had a few good races; a 2nd, a couple of 4th’s then some 5th’s and 6th’s. In the end I came 5th out of the entire slalom fleet, and 3rd in the men’s slalom division.
I also had a clinic at Cabrillo Beach on Friday morning, thanks to everybody who came out. There was a good showing, and quite a few freestylers down there at Cabrillo.
My plans now are to train until the end of August in the San Francisco Bay Area, before flying to Europe again for the next PWA stops in Holland and Germany.
