2018 Flyer 5.2 sail

Quick Overview

Flyer 5.2 m² foil sail

The Flyer is our foiling sail - it features a unique combination of design, tension and shaping characteristics that are specifically optimized for hydrofoil windsurfing. The design begins with a low aspect ratio, 4-batten, twin cam layout. The luff curve is very straight keeping the rig tension low, but the narrow sleeve, RDM camber system maintains a precise, articulated draft profile. The leech is tighter with less pre-twist for good pumping response, while the subtle spiral twist still maintains clean aerodynamic release.

The Flyer sails have closed top (non-adjustable) mast sleeves and require a reduced diameter mast (RDM). The Flyer sails are optimized for the NoLimitz Sumo and Carbon Twill RDM masts.

Note that the luff and boom lengths listed are intended only as a guide to rig assembly and sail trim. Depending on the rig components you choose and your boom height, these dimensions may not always correspond exactly to the settings that are best for you. We measure boom length from the front of the mast to the back of the clew. Maximum boom length is achieved at a very flat outhaul setting with the boom at the top of the boom opening. We measure luff length from the top of the headcap, around the front of the mast curve to a point perpendicular to the mast opposite the underside of the triple pulley. Refer to the rigging instructions for instruction upon interpreting visual references to proper sail tuning.

  1. What a great sail! Review by Alex

I have been out four times now on the foil with the 5.2 Flyer I got before coming down to Los Barriles. I have to say that the sail handles like a dream, and is everything you described. It’s light, responsive, and powerful. I love how little downhaul tension is required. I found I can get going with about a ten knot puff, and then can glide through even less wind. Macrae was out for hours yesterday and the day before, even when I knew there wasn’t enough wind for me. I would compare it to times in the past when we had our Formula gear with 10 meter sails, as far as the wind required. What an advancement to be able to foil along in such conditions with a 5.2.
I look forward to the time I can range further as I get more and more comfortable with the whole experience. It’s truly fun to be learning something so revolutionary after windsurfing for forty years… (Posted on 12/3/17)
